…though you might think differently, considering my recent blog posts!
So we’ll start with something different.
Nomadic Keyboard Build
One of my projects is to make a mechanical keyboard.
I do a lot of writing. A good portion of my income right now comes from writing, primarily ghostwriting web content. So I spend a lot of time at my keyboard.
Because of this, I have upgraded from using a cheap rubber dome keyboard to a mechanical keyboard. Specifically the HyperX Alloy FPS. I actually do like it very much as a work keyboard.
One day there will be a review, but it is not this day.
As much as I like my current board, it’s a full-size keyboard, which makes it a bit awkward to carry around with me.
Since I travel frequently, I sought something better.
I’ll spare you all of the research I did. Basically, what I wanted was a small programmable keyboard with a certain layout. I’d have to pay $200 to get something close-yet-not-quite.
So I decided to build my own.
The picture above is of the plate for my keyboard. I designed it using the free online keyboard layout editor, got it laser-cut by Ponoko, and will soon put mechanical key switches in it then handwire everything together.
More on that later.
Wutianqi
I have not been idle with my time.
In fact, at the same time I had the keyboard plate laser-cut, I had a couple of Wutianqi tokens cut and engraved. And they came out beautifully!
The new colorblindness-friendly design looks very nice methinks.
I have also updated the rulebook just today and, surprise of surprises, you can download an entire set of pieces!
That’s right, with nothing but a printer and some cardstock, you can play your very own game of Wutianqi! You’ll need two halves of the board, too.
If you do, please, let me know how it goes. I am very interested in feedback and criticism.
In the works is a handful of boards for the game, likely on linen, and 120 tokens printed on normal game chit material.
After that, I will send components off for strangers to playtest.
See you soon!
